Artist Philippe de Champaigne (French, 1602-1674) • "The Good Shepherd"

Baroque era painter, a major exponent of the French school. He was a founding member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris, the premier art institution in the Kingdom of France in the eighteenth century.

Champaigne worked for the Queen Mother, Marie de Medicis, He also worked for Cardinal Richelieu, for

"Tam the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep" - John 10:14-15

"I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep".

In the back a prayer "The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack" is taken directly from Psalm 23:1, signifying that God provides for all of one's needs and cares for them like a shepherd cares for their sheep; it is a powerful expression of trust and reliance on God's protection and provision

John 10:7 Jesus declares “I am the good shepherd.” He describes Himself as not only “the shepherd” but the “good shepherd.” A title of Jesus , based on a passage in the Gospel of John , where he says, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep,” and “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” The metaphor of God as a shepherd is also found in the Old Testament .

BACK Prayer:
"The LORD is my Shepard: There is nothing I lack. In green pastures he makes me lie down. to still waters he leads me. He restores my soul. He guides me along right paths, for the sake of his name."
