The author Brother Aegidius Roeder SDS was born in October 1865 in Rumburg,
Germany. He made his profession of vows in the Society of the Divine Savior (Salvatorians) in Rome IN 1888. The Provincial, Fr Jordan, asked Br. Aegidius to devote all his time to his art.
In the earliest years of the Society, much of its ministry was devoted to the “apostolate of the press.”
The printing of religious instruction manuals and various spiritual magazines, and the distribution of Catholic literature were part of the primary tasks of the young Society. Having faced much opposition in Germany, where Catholic literature was not permitted to be printed,

Br. Aegidius’ artwork wasn’t limited to the European Salvatorian publications. His works also graced the magazines of the USA Province –
Br. Aegidius died in Meran, Italy, in 1928, at the age of 62. Even today, his works are considered to be among the highest quality drawings and paintings in the history of Salvatorian publications
